Here’s a story, of a made up family. Six boys and girls, two ladies and dear dad. Blended families were not yet the norm then. But Sherwood Schwartz created nothing bad.

The Brady Bunch first aired in 1969 and continued through until 1974, going into syndication the following year continuing to mesmerize young audiences with it’s simplified idealistic family life. The premise, if you’ve yet to see an episode, sees a widow, played by Robert Reed, with three sons, marry a woman played by Florence Henderson, who has three daughters. As if this wasn’t enough people living under one roof, stay-at-home mom Carol, gets a live-in housekeeper / assistant, Alice, as part of the deal when she marries Mike Brady.

The show has stood the test of time by focusing on universal childhood/ teenage dilemmas: sibling rivalry, battles of the sexes, self-esteem and other coming of age traumas, rather than political upheavals or current events from the time in which it was produced. The show also dealt with jealousies / insecurities that are unique to blended families. Issues are always addressed without violence and in the end even the kids have a reasonable maturity. There never seems to be any real financial stress on the family, save for one episode about responsibilities and a telephone, which for most large or blended families watching, really was an escape from reality.

The show probably says more about the 1970s than it does about the some unknown space voyaging race of humans.

The show starts with a narration that live on earth might have began somewhere on another planet. Immediately afterwards we’re treated to scenes of an armistice that’s been achieved with a race of self-aware killer robots. Only the peace treaty is a farce and the robots launch a surprise attack on humanity in attempt at genocide. One sole surviving space warship, the Galactica, survives and ends up leading a rag tag fugitive fleet of civilian ships on a quest to find earth. The entire series tells of their struggles to outrun the robots and survive.

Wiseguy is a show that aired from 1987 to 1990 and it followed Vinnie Terranova, an undercover FBI agent. He did several years in jail in order to go “deep undercover” in the organized crime business. This show focused on what it deep cover was like but it followed a soap opera format. On that note you get great examples of 1980s fashions and music!

In the early 80s everyone had Indiana Jones mania and Tales of the Gold Monkey was an obvious attempt to cash in on it. The series only lasted one year from 1982 to 1983 which in many ways sad. Sure, the storylines were trite and the acting was often over the top. However, there was something absolutely charming in the series. Especially, the dog named Jack who made the entire series very family oriented. Which, I might add, was despite the good looking Caitlin O’Heaney often being in a wet blouse that showed off her figure.

All things considered equal, this show is really fun to watch. It represents the mentalities of the early 1980s culture that praised masculine bravado and courage. The last time where daring and perseverance was all a man needed to get the girl.
