The Fly is a 1958 science fiction-horror film

The Fly was directed by Kurt Neumann and starred Vincent Price renowned and celebrated horror film actor, played the lead part as scientist Andre Delambre. He invents a teleportation device. But when he accidentally teleports himself with a common housefly, the fly’s genes become intertwined with his own, causing a mutation that transforms him into a grotesque and monstrous creature.

The film set a new standard for the science fiction genre with groundbreaking special effects. The convincing fly transformation sequence, in particular, was widely regarded as one of the best special effects of its time. Thanks to the technical and artistic brilliance of Hollywood artist Charles Ben who did both makeup and special effects for The Fly. The film’s success helped establish 20th Century Fox as a major player in the science fiction genre. It was so successful in fact, the film spawned two sequels and studio remade The Fly, in color this time, in 1986.

Departing from the typical themes of science fiction, which often focused on futuristic societies and space exploration, The Fly instead explored the darker side of science and technology. In particular, the consequences of playing God with the natural world. The dangers of unchecked scientific progress presented in this film, set the scene for ethical debate in the years succeeding it’s release. (Something, along with disbelieving in God, unfortunately modern scientists believe they have overcome).

Miracle on 34th Street is about good things happening.

Miracle on 34th Street is all American Christmas classic that reminds us that anything is possible with a little faith in our fellow man. It is heartwarming and highlights many of the season’s traditions under a backdrop of progressive thinking and the conflicts that ensue, This black and white holiday movie has been both remade and colorized, but here we are offering Miracle on 34th Street in it’s original beauty.

Natalie Wood stars as Susan Walker a show stealing, very practical matter-of-fact child who being raised by a single Mom (Maureen O’Hara) is all too familiar with the realities of life. The story of Miracle on 34th Street is ultimately a romance, but it centers around a certain Kris Kringle played by Edmund Gwenn (aka Santa Claus) who is hired by O’Hara to be the Macy’s Parade Santa. He is super popular with the public as he speaks even to the foreigners in their native languages, and has a real beard and will direct parents to other stores, instead of pushing merchandise they don’t want. But he really gets into hot water when he declares that he is the real deal, not just some department store stand in.

It turns into a highly publicized court case that ensues which threatens to see Kris locked up in an insane asylum . John Payne playing lawyer Fred Gailey, comes to the old-timers defense. He is the neighbor to the Walkers and with the encouragement of Susan is spending more time with them, but he is desperate to find a suitable government authority to recognize Kris Kringle as the real Santa before Christmas.

Miracle on 34th Street is a feel good movie that’s filled with vintage ideals and nostalgia. A simple time when shopping for gifts was a pleasure and had to be done in a bricks and mortar store. Plus the American Dream wasn’t out of reach for most people. So for purely a feel good about life, Miracle on 34th Street scores an 8/10

It Came from Outer Space is a sci-fi that was originally created to feature 3D technologies, using the glasses, even though filmed in black and white it achieved a veiw master type effect and terrified audiences. Today it is difficult to find working 3D versions although I am told the bluray disks have this feature as one of two options. Regardless, the film is still enjoyable to watch and very visually appealing even without the full 3D effect.

Amateur astronomer John Putman watches a meteorite through his telescope one night. He wakes a neighbor (who has a helicopter) and the pair go with his girlfriend to the crash site. Excitedly, scurrying into the crater, John notices that it was not a meteorite but a spaceship, as he scrambles back to tell the others, the ground shakes and the ship is buried. Nobody really believes him that aliens have landed until the small town starts to see some of it’s people behaving very strangely. The sheriff then gets a posse together to hunt down the aliens, while John has discovered that these benign visitors are trying to repair their ship and leave.

It becomes a battle of wits and a race against time as human prejudice and fears drive the towns folk. While curiosity, compassion and hope drive John to help hide the aliens achieve there escape. – It would have been great to watch this 3D movie in the original cinemas! Or, it maybe someone should have made a 3D video game based on it.
