Weird Science is almost aptly named, it is definitely weird, but the only thing scientific about it is science fiction. It focuses on two nerdy socially awkward friends Gary (Anthony Michael Hall) and Wyatt (Ilan Mitchell-Smit) that wish the attentions of the girlfriends of their jock rivals Max and Ian (a very young Robert Downey Jr).

Woke audiences might have a heart attack at the misogynist premise of Weird Science. Especially when the hormonal heroes create a woman out of magazine cuttings and a barbie doll hooked up to a computer. But they may enjoy the movie in spite of themselves, if they focus on the fact that “their created feminine ideal” is more akin to a witch, who decides to meddle in their pathetic lives. Despite Lisa’s beauty and obvious sexuality, the boys get only her wit, wisdom and witchcraft.

Lisa (Kelly LeBrock) is able to conjure sports cars at the snap of her fingers and transform people into humbling creatures that reflect their inner self. She does this to Wyatt’s bullying older brother, turning him into a blob.
Weird Science has become a classic from the era of teen flicks that director John Hughes dominated. The jock versus nerd rivalry of this age, no longer has the same dynamic since the gender lines have blurred. However trying to fit in and attract a crush are the timeless realities in the weird science called life.

In case you are wondering who is this Kelly LeBrock? Well. Back in the day she had a commercial where she said, “Don’t hate me because I am Beautiful.”

This sci-fi police drama, Alien Nation, was cancelled too soon after only a single season 1989-1990. The setting is Los Angeles when refuge aliens are trying to integrate into society. These aliens were on a slave ship which crashed in the Mohave Desert. The aliens called newcomers, have heightened senses and intelligence when compared with humans, have to adjust to a society who is less than completely welcoming. The show looks at social issues, while it uses the police drama backdrop to try to solve the mystery of how the slave colony came to be on earth and who were/are their terrifying overlords.

Alien Nation was the conception of Rockne S. O’Bannon, the same man who brought us Farscape. But the television series was developed by Kenneth Culver Johnson, the same man who brought us the Incredible Hulk, The Bionic Woman, and the miniseries V. This program was excellent but cancelled due to network problems (Fox was a fledgling among TV producers at the time and cancelled the successful program as part of their restructuring.)

The two main characters are Detective Matt Sikes played by Gary Graham and George Francisco played by Eric Pierpoint. Matt has been paired with George, a newcomer after his partner is killed in action. Matt lives alone, but has a newcomer Cathy Frankel (Terri Treas) as his alluring neighbor. The Francisco family is comprised George, his wife Susan played by Michelle Scarabelli, adolescent son Buck played by Sean SIx, and inquisive daughter Emily played by Lauren Woodland. James Greene rounds out the family as Uncle Moodri, the family elder.

Otherworld- Was a short lived sci-fi fantasy released in 1985. It is true family entertainment where a family visiting the pyramids in Egypt gets swept into a vortex that transports them to a parallel world where societies are isolated from each other. In each episode, the family must face conflict brought on by extreme xenophobia and differing cultural norms, much like Sliders encountered a decade later, but the dynamic of a 1980s nuclear family is very different than the heroes of Sliders.

These 8 episodes are only available from VCR recordings, so this digital copy is not high quality. But this is an otherwise lost program, so enjoy it for what it is.

The family’s nemesis is played by Jonathan Banks better known from Breaking Bad. He is first to encounter the Sterling family when they reach the Otherworld. He is a trooper responsible for maintaining the boundaries called forbidden zones between isolated provinces. Each province has it’s own set of social norms and laws. The struggle and ensuing escape from him gives the family his access crystal which allows them to open any door and thereby gain access to any province they come across. So while traveling looking for a way home, the Sterlings are also being ruthlessly pursued by him.

Summer Lovers is a romantic comedy unlike any other. It explores open relationships and the complications they present on the backdrop of the dreamy paradise of Santorini, Greece era 1982. The scenery is stunning and authentic for the time.(things like the grape stomping bar had closed by the late 90s). The soundtrack is great and includes the hits by Chicago, The Pointer Sisters.and Tina Turner.

A young American couple of college grads are spending 9 weeks in the Greek isles before beginning their respective professional lives. Cathy Featherstone, an fledgling photographer and Michael Pappas, who is set to take over his father’s business, have been dating for 5 years and known each other since their teens. Their vacation allows them to enjoy nude beaches and explore their sexuality, shaking off responsibilities and parental expectations.

Micheal gets distracted one day by another woman Lina, who is an archaeologist helping to unearth the Akrotiri excavation. (According to the tourist webpage, the site is still open for visits). They end up having sex and overcome by guilt he confesses to Cathy. She, understandably gets upset and yells at him to get it out of his system. She tries to be with someone else, but can’t do it. While Micheal stays out all night at Lina’s. Cathy confronts Lina, who explains that she isn’t looking for a complicated relationship, so she won’t be taking Michael from Cathy. Cathy likes Lina in spite of herself and she begins to be included in the couple’s explorations of the island.

The relationship develops all around, until they are an inseparable threesome. Lina gets worried that if she stays with them it will hurt worse when they leave. And she disappears. The couple search high and low for her for days, finally deciding that if she doesn’t want to be found, they won’t find her. Everything around them reminds them of her and they pack to leave 3 weeks before their lease is up.
Lina meanwhile realizes that she was truly happy with them and heads back, only to find the house empty. She rushes to the airport, they see her just before boarding the plane, and overjoyed celebrate her return.
