Vixen embodies the sexual liberation

Vixen was released in 1968 and it’s a classic example of sexual liberation and exploration hailed among liberal Americans in 1968.  This Russ Meyer movie follows the story of a sexually liberated woman named Vixen. She is married to a Canadian bush pilot and enjoys, in his absence,  seducing men, both local and foreign. She is portrayed as a confident, independent woman who takes charge of her own sexuality and has no qualms about engaging in sexual activities with multiple partners.

The 1960s sexual revolution and women’s liberation movements were at their height in 1968 when the movie Vixen came out. The movie portrays Vixen as a sexually empowered woman, who is in control of her own body and desires. She is not portrayed as a victim or a sex object, but rather as a powerful and confident woman who enjoys her sexuality without shame.  The movie also challenges traditional gender roles and expectations. Vixen enjoys taking charge and initiating sexual activities. Her husband, Tom, is portrayed as a passive partner who is content to let Vixen take the lead. This is a departure from traditional gender roles, where the man is usually seen as the dominant partner in a sexual relationship.

Pheromones make women super horny

However, while “Vixen” may have been reflective of liberal Americans’ sexual attitudes, it would have been denounced and shocked conservative America.  In the 60s conservatism was still closely tied to the Church. Christian values and morality that  viewed sex as something that should be kept private and within the confines of marriage.  This was a time before female pastors and homosexual marriages and the multiple evangelist scandals. Also anyone wanting to see the movie had to go to the theater, and no self-respecting conservative at the time would dare try to see a movie deemed morally corrupt.

Catch some 1980s insanity

The 1968 Russ Meyer movie shows the beginnings of America’s changing sexual attitudes.  The film Vixen portrays a sexually liberated woman who is in control of her own sexuality and desires. It also challenges traditional gender roles and expectations. While it would have been denounced by conservative America at it’s time due to its frank portrayal of sexual activity and nudity, audiences today would not be bothered by its content. Just keep in mind that this is an r rated film containing nudity and not for children.

Frosty the Snowman is a 1969 cartoon

Released as a half hour TV Christmas special for children. Another Rankin/Bass production, like Rudolph the Red Nosed reindeer, it is based on the 1950’s children’s song Frosty the Snowman. This cartoon brings to life the song’s lyrics like the magic hat brought Frosty to life. It even gives a back story to the magical hat by providing an antagonist in the form of an unskilled children’s entertainer, who threw away his top hat in a fit of frustration.

Woo Who Vintage

This TV special has bright colors, and a light heart spirit, interlaced with slightly slapstick comedy. Frosty the Snowman, quizzically speaks in full sentences, but can’t count past 5, yet somehow he knows that he must go to the North Pole to stay cold! As a very logical child 6 year old, I remember questioning the juxtaposition of innate knowledge and ignorance, even before I knew the word to describe it. Still the cartoon was one of my favorites for the magical Christmas theme and simple comedy. I even spent the winter I was 10 doing belly wops like Frosty the Snowman, to toboggan down my grade school snow-hill. I gradually ruined my snowsuit in the process, but what a way to go!

Rankin/Bass went on to produce two of the four sequels to this original cartoon. In 1976, Frosty’s Winter Wonderland was based on the Christmas song Winter Wonderland. It was followed by Rudolph and Frosty’s Christmas in July in 1979. Then in 1992, Bill Melendez Productions made a new world for our hero. The result was Frosty Returns, with Johnathon Winters narrating and John Goodman taking over the voice of Frosty. The last edition of this song inspired, cartoon character came out in 2005, titled the Legend of Frosty the Snowman, but it went direct to video.

Here’s a story, of a made up family. Six boys and girls, two ladies and dear dad. Blended families were not yet the norm then. But Sherwood Schwartz created nothing bad.

The Brady Bunch first aired in 1969 and continued through until 1974, going into syndication the following year continuing to mesmerize young audiences with it’s simplified idealistic family life. The premise, if you’ve yet to see an episode, sees a widow, played by Robert Reed, with three sons, marry a woman played by Florence Henderson, who has three daughters. As if this wasn’t enough people living under one roof, stay-at-home mom Carol, gets a live-in housekeeper / assistant, Alice, as part of the deal when she marries Mike Brady.

The show has stood the test of time by focusing on universal childhood/ teenage dilemmas: sibling rivalry, battles of the sexes, self-esteem and other coming of age traumas, rather than political upheavals or current events from the time in which it was produced. The show also dealt with jealousies / insecurities that are unique to blended families. Issues are always addressed without violence and in the end even the kids have a reasonable maturity. There never seems to be any real financial stress on the family, save for one episode about responsibilities and a telephone, which for most large or blended families watching, really was an escape from reality.

If you like musicals, you can’t get much better than Elvis Presley and Ann-Margret, the pair star together in the 1964 Viva Las Vegas. George Sidney directs the film considered one of Elvis’ bests, partially due to exceptional chemistry with his co-star. The backdrop to the movie is the Grand Prix Race, and Elvis, playing Lucky Jackson is set to drive but first he needs to replace the engine in his Elva Mark VI Maserati.

Money is easy come and easy go in Las Vegas. And Lucky gets the cash that he needs only to lose it again, after being knocked into the pool by Ann Margret’s character, swimming instructor Rusty Martin. Unable to even pay his hotel bill, Lucky starts working as a waiter, then signs up to a talent contest, hoping to try his fortune once again at getting the money for his car’s engine.

Before the contest, Lucky sets to wooing Rusty. His competition for both the girl and the Grand Prix is Ceasar Danova playing Count Elmo Mancini, driving his Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta. Rusty falls for Lucky, but wants to make a few changes.

Night of the Living Dead is a low budget independent film first released in 1968, which has since become a horror cult classic and prototype for zombie genre films. George A. Romero co-wrote, directed, edited and filmed his original masterpiece with John Russo assisting in the writing. The picture was controversial and hated by many for its gory violent content, but that did not stop it earning more that 250 times profit, by grossing US$ 30 million in the combined US and International markets. This black and white picture is considered by many critics among the greatest movies ever made.

Woke audiences won’t enjoy the damsel in distress portrayal of women, that was rampant during the era, but they may be appeased by the heroic portrayal of Ben by actor Daune Jones. Jones an African American, is not only the lead character, but also the voice of calm reason among a panicked population. His cool leadership is juxtaposed against cowardly and irrational white male counterparts and screaming or comatose women, who are all holed up in a Pennsylvania farmhouse fending off an increasing onslaught of un-dead cannibals.

The movie opens with Barbra, played by Judith O’Dea, and her brother Johnny making an annual drive to visit their father’s rural grave site. Barbra is freaked out by the cemetery and Johnny clowns around trying to scare her. When a pale faced man wearing a ripped suit suddenly attacks her. Johnny is killed trying to come to her defense and she runs off looking for help. She runs into the first house she finds, and discovers the home owner’s partially eaten dead body. Looking outside she sees the ghoul from the cemetery has been joined by several others and they are headed her way. Our hero Ben arrives, and starts fortifying the farmhouse, shooting zombies that get too close with a rifle he found in the home. Others arrive until there are seven refugees taking shelter in the home. Night falls and the zombie attack is held off by fire and guns.

The group is informed by radio announcements that there is a wave of mass murder across the countryside and un-dead corpses. In response, armed men are organizing into posses and sweeping the area shooting ghouls on sight. They are warned that bodies discovered should be burned to prevent reanimation and that bullets or severe bows to the head, seem to be the only other way to stop these relentless cannibals. The gov’t has set up rescue centers and a plan is made, by the disagreeable housemates to get there, but the zombies are between their safe house and escape route.

The Time Tunnel

The time tunnel is a top secret project that allows Drs. Tony Newman and Doug Phillips to travel in time. However these first experiments don’t always go off exactly as planned and the educated explorers find themselves tumbling into situations that put their respective knowledge, ingenuity and courage to the test, as the link with the laboratory and present day is not always stable. The pair of American scientists, now swirl in a maze of ages up and down the time line. Randomly dropping into a new fantastic situation, these adventurers are monitored and aided whenever possible by their partner scientists who maintain and power the tunnel at its source.

Created by 20th Century Fox, the Time Tunnel aired on ABC for just a single season between 1966 and 1967. But American television being what it was in the 60s; they gave us 30 whole episodes to enjoy. Robert Colbert and James Darren star in this sci-fi time travel adventure series which was shot in full color. The series is set, realistically just two years ahead of it’s broadcast time, in 1968.

The time tunnel, so named because of the psychedelic hallway that results from a major government endeavor to build a time machine called project Tic-Toc. The experiment Tic-Toc is based in Arizona, in a massive hidden subterranean structure than extends 800 floors below the surface of the ground. The time travelers share a joint direction of top secret project with Lt. General Heywood played by Whit Bissell. Dr Anthony “Tony” Newman is played by James Darren and Dr. Douglas Phillips is played by Robert Colbert. Scientific specialists monitoring and assisting these daring heroes are John Zaremba as electronics expert Dr. Raymond Swain and the beautiful Lee Meriwether as Dr. Ann MacGregor who keeps tabs on the travelers bio signatures and monitors the relative stresses of force and heat that the travelers are exposed to by the tunnel. We are told that the complex in total employs over 12000 specialists that help maintain and securely run the facility.

Yogi made his debut in 1958 on The Huckleberry Hound Show.

He was the first breakout character in animated television. Yogi was created by Hanna-Barbera and he went on to become even more popular than Huckleberry Hound. In 1961, he was given his own show, The Yogi Bear Show, which was sponsored by Kellogg’s and included Snagglepuss and Yakky Doodle.

That Girl was a TV show that aired from 1966 to 1971. It was perhaps the first “working girl” sitcom in American television history. But what really makes it unique was that the lead character, Anne Marie, wore the greatest clothes that were available at the time. In fact I think most of today’s fashionistas would still wear everything that was in the show.
