Based on a best seller novel of the same name,The AmityVille Horror, this 1979 movie stars Margot Kidder (Superman) and James Brolin. The story follows a family who purchased the home of an extreme crime scene 13 months after Ronald Joseph DeFeo Jr. killed both his parents, two brother and two sisters with a shot gun in the house.

This is another Wes Craven film, but the Serpent and the rainbow is shot with such surprising realism that you can forget at times you are watching a film and think you are watching a documentary or recreation of real life story

The movie begins with Jill Johnson played by Carol Kane babysitting for a local Dr. and his wife. After the kids are asleep and she is waiting for the parents to return, she starts to get phone calls asking her if she has checked on the children. She has heard nothing from them and figured that it is just a prank call. But the calls continue and increase in frequency so she calls the police, who discover that the calls are originating from within the home. The children were murdered shortly after Jill arrived to babysit.

This is the story of a lecturing Dr. Frankenstein, named Frederick who is grandson to the infamous lunatic Dr. Frankenstein. (Part of the reason for making this film in black in white is to capture another epoch more realistically for 1970s audiences). Frederick, changes his name’s pronunciation in order to distance himself from his infamous relative.

The story premise is pretty simple. The hereditary owner of the summer camp decides to reopen the long closed location after years of neglect. It’s 1980 and he has advertised for some summer counselors who are willing to help him with a few repairs and set up to get the camp going
