The Crow (1994): A Study of Loss, Revenge, and Redemption

Released in 1994, *The Crow* is a film that has garnered a cult following over the years, based on the comic book series by James O’Barr, the film stars Brandon Lee in his final role, which adds a layer of tragedy to the film’s narrative. The film’s story revolves around Eric Draven, a rock musician who returns from the dead to avenge his and his fiancée’s brutal and senseless murder.

The film’s visual mix of gothic-noir is striking and contributes significantly to its atmosphere. Shot in Detroit, the city’s gritty urban landscape enhances the film’s dark tone, creating a world that feels both fantastical and hauntingly real. The use of shadows, rain-soaked streets, and stark lighting evokes a sense of foreboding that mirrors Eric’s emotional state. This visual storytelling is complemented by a haunting score that features contributions from artists such as The Cure, Nine Inch Nails, and Stone Temple Pilots. The music not only sets the tone but also encapsulates the film’s themes of despair and longing.

Brandon Lee’s performance as Eric Draven is central to the film’s impact. Tragically, Lee died in an accident during the filming, which adds a layer of poignancy to his portrayal. His embodiment of Eric is both powerful and vulnerable. As “the Crow” he conveys a sense of loss and rage while maintaining his fragile humanity. This performance has often been regarded as a defining moment in his career, showcasing his talent and charisma. The tragedy of his death has led many fans to view the film as a memorial, which further solidifies its emotional resonance.

Cuck Dollars

At its core, The Crow is a tale of love transcending death. Eric Draven and his fiancée, Shelly, share a deep bond that is violently severed when they are attacked by a gang. Their love story, though short-lived, serves as the emotional backbone of the film. The poignant flashbacks that illustrate their relationship create a contrast to the dark and violent present, allowing the audience to empathize deeply with Eric’s pain. The film effectively portrays how love can be a source of strength and a catalyst for revenge, driving Eric to seek justice for Shelly’s death.

The Crow is a multifaceted film that combines elements of fantasy, horror, and romance to explore love, loss, and redemption. Through its striking visuals, a haunting soundtrack, and a poignant performance by Brandon Lee, the film resonates with audiences on emotional and intellectual levels. As both a work of art and a memorial, The Crow remains a significant cultural touchstone that continues to captivate viewers decades after its release.

A Vampire in Brooklyn is a 1995 horror-comedy film

A Vampire in Brooklyn was directed by Wes Craven, featuring a screenplay by up-and-coming screenwriter, and later established filmmaker, Roy Frumkes. The film stars Eddie Murphy, Angela Bassett, Allen Payne, and John Witherspoon. This unique blend of horror and comedy turns the idea of dark comedy on it’s head.

The film is set in Brooklyn,  and follows Maximilian (Eddie Murphy), a vampire who arrives in the city seeking a new place to thrive. Maximilian is on a quest to find his long-lost vampire queen, who, according to ancient lore, is the key to completing his eternal existence. He believes that she is a woman named Rita (Angela Bassett), a psychologist with a mysterious past that connects her to the vampire world.

Maximilian’s arrival in Brooklyn is marked by a series of gruesome killings, which capture the attention of the local police, including Detective Justice (Allen Payne).  Detective Justice finds himself increasingly entangled in the case, as the body count raises, it even intersects with his personal life. Meanwhile, Rita is drawn into Maximilian’s dangerous charm, and it becomes clear that her connection to him runs deeper than initially thought.

Throughout the film, Maximilian’s quest unfolds amid a backdrop of dark humor and urban eccentricities. The film combines traditional vampire lore with comedic elements, particularly through

“A Vampire in Brooklyn” attempts to merge the horror genre with comedy. Eddie Murphy’s versatile performance, which includes a dual role as Maximilian and a host of supporting characters. His portrayal of Maximilian is charismatic and adds a comedic twist to the traditional vampire archetype. Murphy’s ability to shift between comedy and drama provides a dynamic edge to the character and keeps the film engaging. Directed by Wes Craven, known for his work in the horror genre, the film brings a unique flavor to vampire mythology. Craven’s direction gives the film a distinctive style, blending suspenseful moments with light-hearted humor.

Angela Bassett delivers a strong performance as Rita, bringing depth to a character who is central to the film’s plot. Her role as a psychologist who is unwittingly connected to the vampire world adds a layer of complexity to the narrative. Bassett’s portrayal is the “straight-man” in the film, balancing out the comedic elements brought by Murphy.

A Vampire in Brooklyn, driven largely by Eddie Murphy’s performance, is an interesting experiment in combining horror with comedy. While it may not be a classic of either genre, it provides an entertaining and occasionally humorous take on vampire mythology. The film’s blend of a modern urban setting, coupled with Murphy’s versatility, makes it a notable entry in Wes Craven’s filmography.

Spanking the Monkey stars Alberta Watson

Spanking the money is a 1994 film turns family drama on it’s head. redefining the relationship between a parent and their offspring.  The film’s title itself is a euphemism for masturbation, when one takes “matters into their own hands”.  However, the main character Raymond, feels increasingly that his fate is out of his hands.  Raymond (Jeremy Davies) has plans for a summer internship when his father makes him care for his bedridden mother instead. Susan (Alberta Watson), isn’t physically unwell, but she has limited mobility because of a broken leg. As Susan becomes increasingly dependent on Raymond, their relationship takes a disturbing turn, leading to a taboo romantic connection between mother and son.

Exploring sexual awakening in the context of an inappropriate relationship “Spanking the Monkey” attempts to address the conflictual nature of the Oedipus complex.  Raymond is resentful of his familial situation, especially since it has disrupted hard earned advances on his career path. He finds himself struggling to relate to his peers and is sexually awkward with his attractive neighbor.  Regardless, his sexual frustration, begins drive him into the arms of his mother, who is ever present in his daily activities. This exploration of a taboo subject forces the audience to question the boundaries of acceptable human behavior and challenges us to consider how circumstances can push individuals to do things normally reprehensible.

One could argue that director David O. Russell’s willingness to tackle such prohibited subjects is a daring artistic choice, especially for his first feature film. The forbidden change in nature of the principle mother -son relationship,  is not the only dark theme.  Raymond’s narcissistic parents manipulate him for their own comforts, though-out the movie. He is driven  to near suicide, as he increasingly loses control, over the direction his life is taking. So this is also a film about toxic relationships, how commitment with the wrong priorities can undo the best laid plans, robbing a person of years of hard-work.

Tactical Soap

Some believe that the explicit and provocative nature of the content is purely to titillate the audience. But I believe that it only strengthens the metaphor for this coming of age film. As Raymond’s individual identity and purpose is being smothered to death, by his position as dutiful son.  Lost opportunities, broken promises, the role reversal from child to caregiver, then from offspring to independent individual. “Spanking the Monkey” is one young man’s disturbing journey to learn how to “take matters into his own hands” and become the independent adult he was meant to be.

The Cement Garden (1993)

The Cement Garden was based on Ian McEwan’s novel of the same name. It’s a bizarre film almost surreal. The story revolves around a family with 4 children, and the tragedies they endure. Like the backyard “garden” cemented in, the dysfunctional family struggles in its development.  Tragedies orphan the 4 siblings and they struggle to deal with things in each his own way.

Watch Le Grand Jete

The film is focused on the eldest boy Jack, who at 15 feels guilty for his father’s heart attack.  He was supposed to be helping him re-cement the backyard, the Cement Garden. But he had snuck away to masturbate. In fact, this is largely a coming of age film for Jack (Andrew Robertson), who goes from a narcissistic masturbator to the male head of his household in a few short months. The shared responsibilities, and lack of adult supervision, turn his hormonal tendencies into an unhealthy obsession for his 17 year old sister Julie (Charlotte Gainsbourg).

Get laid with Pheromone Infused Soap

The tension between the elder pair of siblings is typical at first. As when their mother takes ill, Julie finds herself strapped down with the full responsibilities of a housewife. Their mother prepares for a long hospital stay and warns Jack that he must help his sister keep her absence secret as the authorities would put his younger siblings, maybe him too, into protective services and take the family home. When she dies before treatment, Jack and Julie hide her body in the basement, encased in the leftover cement meant for the Cement Garden.

The youngest brother Tom is only a first grader. He misses his mother so much that be begins a psychological spiral. This spiral starts with bullying, continues with cross-dressing and role playing and ends with him adopting infantile behaviors. This pseudo-sexuality is rarely seen or captured in such a young actor. But the Cement Garden is not your typical film. Tom was played by the director, Andrew Birkin’s own son Ned. And the family affair doesn’t end there, as the female lead, Charlotte Gainsbourg is the director’s niece.

Johnny Mnemonic (1995)

The cyberpunk drama, Johnny Mnemonic, was set in 2021. Although they got a lot of the tech wrong, it is still very relevant to watch and see how much they got right. There is a worldwide pandemic, different from what we experienced, but not really inconceivable. The general theme is that, “Those who control the information control the world”, and this has become an undeniable fact. Corporate influence and the pursuit of money and power have disabled society; keeping everyone desperate and difficult to trust. Considering the original short story by William Gibson, was published in 1981, the accuracy of his dystopian world is quite impressive.

The film’s main protagonist Johnny Mnemonic is a courier of sensitive data through a cybernetic implant in his brain. (Forgive them for thinking 80 G was a lot, terabytes were rather inconceivable in the mid-90s).
When Johnny downloads more than he can handle, he is up against the clock to get the data out of his head. Mid transfer, the Yakuza attacks. Now everyone wants his head and he needs to break the encryption to get it out. Fighting to stay alive, Johnny is rescued by Jane (one for the feminists), a woman enhanced with cybernetics. Played by Dina Meyer, she becomes his bodyguard. They enlists the help of the Lo-Tek , a rebel anti-establishment group. Lo-Tek is run by J-Bone, played by Ice-T (more for woke audiences).

Watch the cyber movie Altered States

For those not familiar with cyberpunk, it’s a genre of sci-fi that makes the establishment nervous to say the least. The secret service raided a RPG publisher and confiscated their Gurps Cyperpunk, along with their computer systems. William Gibson is said to have pioneered this genre, he even coined the term cyberspace, long before it existed. The world of Johnny Mnemonic may not be a reality in 2023, but it’s potential is more realistic than most of us believed when the movie came out. Remember that you have been warned; using cyberspace leaves traces of you, no matter how insignificant or innocuous you think it is. Only low tech/ no technology (lo-tek) trumps high technology.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TMNT was released in 1990

The underlying theme in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is about being outcasts in society. These Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have to hide in the sewers of NY to keep anyone from knowing of their existence. Only venturing out at night under the cover of darkness; it’s a tough existence for individualistic teens trying to establish a sense of self. The Turtles with their mentor Splinter (a mutant Japanese immigrant ninja rat) are a close knit family living off the refuse of society. The TMNT family situation is paralleled by the Penningtons, father Charles runs a news station, and he can provide everything his son Danny could want. But Danny as a motherless 15 year old with an overworked father, feels unloved. Enter the antagonist Shedder and his thieving group of ninja foot-soldiers known as the Foot Clan. Shredder preaches how everyone under his authority is family, and how he provides a home for the rejects of society, Although Danny has not finished his training (Is not a full Clan member), he still steals for the organization and skips school to hang out with other teenage outcasts.

If you are looking for a fun family film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has it all. This is no cartoon, but a live action, using costumes created by the amazing Jim Henson (Creator of the Muppets). TMNT opens on NY city with television reports of a crime wave that is being ignored by the political offices (As familiar as that sounds, this is a movie suitable for children, so the criminals are unseen, and therefore NOT violent). This is a family positive movie and while it is great for the whole family, males in particular should watch this.

Reporter April O’Neil (who works for Charles Pennington) the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Casey Jones, are all fighting back against the Foot Clan; individually at first and finally as a team. April keeps fearlessly putting herself in danger, while the Turtles have to get better at fighting as a unit. Casey is sort of like a big brother in Splinter’s absence and the scene with him and Donatello working on a truck together is pure male bonding.

The scent of a woman is a classic vintage film which is another great for the Thanksgiving weekend. Based on a more aptly named Italian novel ” Il Buio et il Miele” (The dark and the honey) it is actually the remake of an Italian award-winning film from 1974. But before you go running off to find the original, know that this film won Pacino his first (hopefully not last) Oscar. The novel title is appropriate because Dark is the perfect word to describe Pacino’s character Frank Slade who is blind (living in darkness) and is miserable both with his life and to everyone around him. In fact, he is suicidal, you can’t get much darker than that. Honey is for the film title scent of a woman, that slightly floral, slightly sweet scent that Frank swears he can follow to know a woman, right down to her hair and eye color.

The subplot in the scent of a woman is about prep-school and standing your ground for what you believe in. The Thanksgiving part of it is reduced to a mere holiday weekend and excuse for the principle characters to meet. But by the end we feel that Pacino’s tough guy is thankful; and expressing his gratitude to the boy Charlie Simms (played by Chris O’Donnell) who was hired to watch him over the holidays and ended up giving him a reason to live again.

For those of you who like a little movie trivia: Pacino, practiced assembling and disassembling his weapon with his eyes closed. When ever he got it right, under 45 seconds, the soldier who trained him yelled “Hoo-ah” which Pacino incorporated into his character for the scent of a woman to show excitement. (No Thanksgiving would be complete without a “Hoo-Ah” yell) The scenes at the Braid all boys school, were actually filmed in an all girl’s school, Emma Willard School. Pacino originally turned down the role, his agent advised him to take it.

The character of Charlie Simms the scent of a woman was auditioned for by both Leonardo DiCaprio and Chris Rock. Just think about that…Dicaprio at the time was the new kid on Growing Pains and in the process of filming the show’s Thanksgiving special.

Jack Nicholson was first choice for Frank Slade and I can see him as the character until we get to “the scent of the woman”…the tango scene; Pacino sweeps you off your feet with his performance.

All in all Classic TV Movies gives this Thanksgiving holiday movie a 7 /10.

Heavy Metal is an animated cartoon style film made specifically for adults; for fans, predominantly male, of Heavy Metal magazine and music. The film showcases a collection of sci-fi fantasy stories adapted from the magazine for the screen, complete with graphic violence, nudity and sexuality fans have enjoyed in the magazine. An unusual cinematic offering for anytime, Heavy Metal was not loved by all critics and did not exactly achieve blockbuster status, it has however developed a cult following.

The story opens with a Corvette dropping from a space shuttle to earth. It’s occupant and astronaut Grimaldi presents his daughter with a orb called the Loc-Nar that destroys him. This evil entity then shows the girl how it has dominated societies throughout time.

Unlike typical animation, the Heavy Metal movie used rotoscoping. Max Fleisher developed the rotoscope which projects live action to be traced over frame by frame making a real live scene into something drawn. The result is a film that is worth seeing just for the technical aspects, but will probably be remembered for its music, and sexually titillating scenes.

In 1990 director Michael Caton-Jones and writer by Monte Merrick created on a fictionalized re-telling of a 1944 documentary title, Memphis Belle: A Story of a Flying Fortress. The movie is a tribute to those that defended our freedoms and way of life, and Memphis Belle closes with a dedication to the real airmen that fought in the skies above Europe in the 2nd world war, most of whom did not return to home unscathed. This movie’s cast includes Matthew Modine, Eric Stoltz, and Harry Connick Jr.

The movie picks up when the Memphis Belle, a B-17 Flying Fortress and her crew are set to complete 25 missions. This last mission will mean her men have completed their tour of duty, this accomplishment is significant because they will be the first group/ bombing crew, in the Eight AIr force to fulfill this prerequisite of returning from 25 bombing missions. Every mission is life threatening, and Colonel Bruce Derringer, played by John Lithgow, is jumping the gun celebrating the team’s success before they even go up in the air for their last bombing run. The Army publicist has big plans for the young men to promote the much needed sale of war bonds with a grand US tour making the heroes celebrities. But before then, the Mephis Belle must, accompanied by the rest of the squadron, fly into Bremen, Germany to obliterate an enemy plane manufacturing plant. The escorting P-51’s are unable to accompany the big bombers all the way to the target, and the vulnerable big boys are forced to fend for themselves over enemy territory and all the way home. As planes are taken out, the Mephis Bell finds herself eventually in the lead. The defensive assault below makes the target impossible to see, and her pilot decides to circle around for a second pass. Everyone takes on damage, and the flight home is riddled with flak, injury and suspense as the enemy forces continue their counter assault.
