Here Comes Mr. Jordan was released in 1941

Here Comes Mr Jordan stands out as a classic example of early American rom-com fantasy. Directed by Alexander Hall, this black and white treasure deftly intertwines humor, romance, and philosophical musings on life and death. Its enduring charm and insightful narrative continue to resonate with audiences, making it a noteworthy entry in Hollywood’s golden age.

Pheromone Soap for men

*Here Comes Mr. Jordan* begins with a whimsical premise: the story revolves around Joe Pendleton (played by Robert Montgomery), a young and promising boxer who meets an untimely death in a plane crash. Pendleton’s demise, however, is no ordinary death; he is mistakenly taken to the afterlife before his time. This clerical error, in the celestial bureaucracy, sets the stage for a comedic yet thought-provoking exploration of fate and destiny.

The film’s title character, Mr. Jordan (portrayed by Claude Rains), is the celestial bureaucrat who oversees the administration of souls transitioning from life to the afterlife. Rains’ portrayal of Mr. Jordan is both authoritative and affable, infusing the character with a blend of gravitas and geniality that enriches the film’s narrative. His role is pivotal as he becomes instrumental in correcting a subordinate’s  mistake.

As the story unfolds, Pendleton is given another chance at life, but with a twist—his soul is placed into the body of a wealthy, but nefarious man, who has just been murdered. This second chance serves as a catalyst for Pendleton to confront various aspects of human nature and morality. The film’s comedic elements emerge from Pendleton’s attempts to navigate his new life, adjust to his altered circumstances, and interact with the people around him, all while trying to return to his former life as a boxer.

The narrative structure of *Here Comes Mr. Jordan* provides a unique lens through which to view the human condition. Its portrayal of an afterlife bureaucracy, along with its exploration of human nature and redemption. One of the film’s standout features is its clever dialogue and witty script. The interplay between the characters, adds a layer of sophistication to the humor. The film balances its comedic moments with a reflective tone, exploring deeper philosophical questions without becoming overly heavy-handed.  *Here Comes Mr. Jordan* is a remarkable film that combines humor, romance, and philosophical inquiry into a cohesive and engaging story.

Watch the Philadelphia Story

The film’s influence extends beyond its initial release. It has inspired subsequent adaptations and remakes, including the 1978 film *Heaven Can Wait*, which echoes similar themes of mistaken identity and second chances. The original *Here Comes Mr. Jordan* remains a significant work in the genre of fantasy-comedy, illustrating how early cinema explored complex themes through accessible and entertaining narratives.

John Huston’s directorial debut Maltese Falcon is a remake of a 1931 film based on the novel of the same name. Starring Humphrey Bogart the classic movie has been ranked one of the best of all times, and has significant historical value for starting the Film Noir genre. Even the site RottenTomatoes has given this black and white classic mystery a score of 100%.

Maltese Falcon is a who dunnit movie that encompasses archetype private detective, fat cat crime boss, and femme fatal. Humprey Bogart plays detective Sam Spade, a role which was turned down by the then popular gangster actor George Raft because he felt himself a bigshot and didn’t wish to work with an unknown director. Mary Astor played his femme fatal client, Peter Lorre as a creepy criminal and Sydney Greenstreet as Casper Gutman, the crime boss.

Interestingly John Huston’s father Walter Huston has a bit part in this film. As Captain Jacoby, he finally delivers the sought after Maltese Falcon to Sam Spade, then succumbs to his wounds. Fans having watched the movie countless times, try to spot all the continuity errors (mostly from costuming).

Christmas in Connecticut brings romance and a moral lesson
Christmas in Connecticut with Ebay

Christmas in Connecticut is a romantic Christmas tale warns of the pit-falls of lying. A successful food columnist has created a fictional life for herself, living on a farm in Connecticut with a husband and small child, In reality she lives alone in an apartment in the city and can’t cook. It is war time and a war hero takes inspiration in her writing, thinking of home. Her publisher thinks that a televised special with her cooking a welcome-home feast for him would be a great moral booster both at home and overseas. (Ironically. it was released just after the war ended when men were all returning home, and women were going back to their kitchens).

Christmas in Connecticut is a comical blend of mistaken identity, best laid plans that go haywire and wise elders who know what’s best for their loved ones. Barbara Stanwyck stars as Elizabeth Lane. With the help of her uncle Felix Bassenak, who is a chef, she uses her column to give his recipes a life of their own. In a desperate attempt to save her job and that of her editor, Elizabeth hatches a plan to continue her charade by marrying a friend who just happens to own a farm in Connecticut.

It’s the movie Holiday Inn and not a place to sleep

Holiday Inn is a 1942 gem which showcases the talents of both Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. It is a romantic musical to be enjoyed at any American holiday. It’s the old story about who is best to win a girl’s heart…a crooner who can dance or a dancer who can sing. Crosby and Astaire start off the film as part of a successful trio with Virginia Dale. Jim Hardy (Crosby) has plans to retire from the entertainment to run a little country hotel, his wants to start a more traditional life there with his partner Lila (Dale), but she isn’t done chasing her dreams in the entertainment world and chooses to stay with Ted Hanover (Astaire) instead. The trio breaks and Ted and Lila form a dancing duo.

Fast forward to December, Jim returns to the big city with an idea of turning his Country Inn into a holidays only venue for dinner and entertainment. He is laughed at by Ted and his agent, but the agent refers a girl Linda Mason (Marjorie Reynolds), who has been harassing him for work, to the Holiday Inn. The next day Jim introduces Linda (and the world) to Irving Berlin’s award winning song White Christmas. She is hired on and the place opens up for New Years’ celebrations.

Help Children in need with a symbolic gift

Meanwhile Ted gets dumped by Lila, who has found herself a millionaire. So he goes to see Jim at the Holiday Inn because he can relate. There he gets drunk and entertains the packed house, with Linda in tow. His agent thinks he has found a new partner, but he is too hungover to remember the previous nights events, and Jim, terrified of history repeating itself hides Linda from Ted and his agent. The film plays out in a game of cat and mouse where Jim falls in love again and does everything he can to keep his old friend and ex partner away from his girl.

The Bells of St Mary’s hit the theaters in 1945

The Bells of St Mary’s stars Bing Crosby who is joined by Ingrid Bergman in the 1945 holiday classic, It was first released in December of that year. As for Christmas, the only link is a cute scene involving a children’s’ pageant. In it Bing Crosby reprises his award-winning role as the priest Father O’Malley. This black and white film has plenty of songs, as we’ve come to expect from Bing Crosby, but it also has a great story-line. The tale takes place in a run-down inner city school, run by nuns who are praying for a way to keep the school open and thereby keep the teachers and students together. The alternative is to bus some of the students elsewhere, with the poorer ones unable to attend the newer private school being put out entirely, while the nuns would be dispersed. Father O’Malley arrives to supervise the school and decide if it can be salvaged.

The Bells of St Mary’s, there is great chemistry between Ingrid Bergman’s character, Sister Mary Benedict and Bing Crosby’s Father O’Malley. The pair are at odds with how things should be run at the school, with Sister Mary being the experienced one and Father O’Malley being an astute judge of character, who seems to work his magic behind the scenes. As the movie is ending Sister Mary is being transferred away from her beloved school. She thinks it is done in spite because she wasn’t always the most cooperative with Father O’Malley, and struggles to remain calm, but in reality her saddened heart is for naught, as she is actually being moved for convalescence of a health condition. Just before she leaves, Father O’Malley reveals to her the reason for her transfer, unburdening her heart from her conflicted feelings.

The Bells of St Mary’s is twice linked (to my favorite film) “It’s a Wonderful Life”. First, it is the film shown on the marquee in Bedford Falls and secondly Henry Travers who plays George Bailey’s guardian angel, is in The Bell’s of St. Mary’s. His role is pivotal, first as a cantankerous industrialist who seems to dislike children and then as the hero of the film who’s generosity saves the school.

Miracle on 34th Street is about good things happening.

Miracle on 34th Street is all American Christmas classic that reminds us that anything is possible with a little faith in our fellow man. It is heartwarming and highlights many of the season’s traditions under a backdrop of progressive thinking and the conflicts that ensue, This black and white holiday movie has been both remade and colorized, but here we are offering Miracle on 34th Street in it’s original beauty.

Natalie Wood stars as Susan Walker a show stealing, very practical matter-of-fact child who being raised by a single Mom (Maureen O’Hara) is all too familiar with the realities of life. The story of Miracle on 34th Street is ultimately a romance, but it centers around a certain Kris Kringle played by Edmund Gwenn (aka Santa Claus) who is hired by O’Hara to be the Macy’s Parade Santa. He is super popular with the public as he speaks even to the foreigners in their native languages, and has a real beard and will direct parents to other stores, instead of pushing merchandise they don’t want. But he really gets into hot water when he declares that he is the real deal, not just some department store stand in.

It turns into a highly publicized court case that ensues which threatens to see Kris locked up in an insane asylum . John Payne playing lawyer Fred Gailey, comes to the old-timers defense. He is the neighbor to the Walkers and with the encouragement of Susan is spending more time with them, but he is desperate to find a suitable government authority to recognize Kris Kringle as the real Santa before Christmas.

Miracle on 34th Street is a feel good movie that’s filled with vintage ideals and nostalgia. A simple time when shopping for gifts was a pleasure and had to be done in a bricks and mortar store. Plus the American Dream wasn’t out of reach for most people. So for purely a feel good about life, Miracle on 34th Street scores an 8/10

It’s a wonderful life is my absolute favorite movie. The story follows George Bailey, played by James Stewart to a point in his life where through no fault of his own he is on the verge of seeing everything he worked for his whole life fall apart. He is understandably distraught and thinks that he is better off dead, or worse, having never existed at all. His guardian angel decides to show him how much his life has enriched those around him, by showing him what things would be like in his quaint little town if he had never been born. He gets the chance to see that it’s a wonderful life.

The beauty of it’s a wonderful life is that it contains a timeless realism because the evil nemesis, Mr. Potter never gets his comeuppance. He cheats, steals and devalues humanity with impunity, getting richer and richer. His only competition is Bailey’s savings and loan cooperative that empowers the hardworking individual and helps people realize their dreams. The moral of the story is that all the money in the world won’t make people love you and that for the average person, their value is in their associations, friends and family. Or as Harry Bailey put it, “A toast to my big brother George, the Richest man in town.” – Truly, it’s a wonderful life is a Christmas Gift for the entire family

Five Little Peppers film series is a collection of 4 movies, loosely based on the Five Little Pepper novel series written by Margaret Sidney between 1881 and 1916. The movies were released in 1939 and 1940, and together would have been the family sitcom of it’s time, but instead were released to the silver screen since the television technology was still in it’s infancy.

The Pepper clan consists of widowed Mrs Pepper and her 5 children, Polly (who becomes the housewife when her mother is working), Ben (who helps as much as he can), Joey (Played by Tommie Bond from Our Gang aka Little Rascals, is playful and mischievous), Davie (kind and quiet) and Phronsie the littlest, too sweet and adorable for words.) The Peppers are terribly poor, but happy and loving.

Mr. Pepper died in a collapsed mine to which he owned half the shares. He wills those shares to his eldest daughter hoping that if she waits until she is of age before selling, by then the mine might be productive and the shares would be worth more. John Pepper was partner with J.H King junior, who also passed during the fateful cave-in that killed the Pepper family patriarch. Leaving an orphaned son, Jasper King to be raised by his father JH King Sr, a man driven by business acquisition, who rarely acknowledges the boy. JH King Sr. wants to acquire the mine shares and encourages his grandson to develop his friendship with the Peppers. A quarantine forces them to stay together and the loving family eventually wins his heart.

The movies in order are:

1939 – Five Little Peppers and How They Grew – The children meet the benefactor
1940 – Five Little Peppers at Home – The children get trapped in a mine
1940 – Out West with the Peppers – The children experience a lumber camp
1940 – Five Little Peppers in Trouble – The children are sent to a private snobbish school

While many generations may be familiar with the Blondie comic strip which ran in the major newspaper funnies section. There also exists a treasure trove of 28 Blondie films, produced by Columbia pictures between the years of 1938 to 1943, and then again by popular demand from 1945 to 1950 The hardworking stars, Arthur Lake playing Dagwood Bumstead with Penny Singleton as Blondie Bumstead also did a Blondie radio series while filming.

Blondie and Dagwood are a down to earth, humble, working-class couple with a young son Baby Dumpling. These Black and white movies are whimsical, with situational and slapstick comedy. Columbia pictures used contract stars opposite the Bumsteads including Glenn Ford in ‘Blondie Plays Cupid” (1940), Rita Haywood in “Blondie on a Budget” (1946) and Shemp Howard (of the 3 stooges) in “Blondie Knows Best” (1940).

Philip Barry wrote a comic play in 1939 titled the Philadelphia Story, to give Katharine Hepburn’s career a much needed boost. Made into a film in 1940 to appeal to larger audiences, Katherine Hepburn reprises her role as a socialite planning her wedding when her ex-husband and a tabloid journalist show up and complicate the preparations. The socialite is based on a real life acquaintance of the playwright, a Mrs. Helen Hope Montgomery Scott who was married to one of his friends and had a reputation for hi-jinx.

George Cukor directed The Philadelphia Story movie with Cary Grant, Ruth Hussey and James Stewart rounding out the principle cast. Tracy Lord, the principle character is used to things going her way and has high expectations for those around her. First born daughter to a well established Philadelphia socialite family, she divorced her first husband two years past for drinking too much, especially when she criticized him for it. Her ex, C.K. Dexter Haven, portrayed by Cary Grant, belongs to the same social group and is a successful yacht designer, while her fiance George Kittredge is Dexter’s opposite, a regular guy who struggles to fit into socialite circles with his personally earned wealth.

Hoping to cover the who’s who of Philadelphia at the wedding, is James Stewart playing a tabloid journalist. He shows up with his paper’s photographer, played by Ruth Hussey. She has a thing for him, but he is oblivious, taking her for granted, while she loyally gets what he needs to make his articles pop off the page.
