Dolemite (1975)

My name is Dolemite !

Dolemite the film seems more like a comedic fan-fiction spoof than something you would expect to go see in theaters. But Dolemite was the first of a series of films written, produced by and starring a middle-aged Rudy Ray Moore. The film is in the genre of Blackplotation as it was made specifically for black audiences, with black performers. I had never heard of any of this until watching Eddie Murphy in “Dolemite is my name”, a biographical film about Rudy Ray Moore.

This is the kind of movie that will offend today’s concepts of social justice. Rudy Ray Moore pulls no punches with his satire and even goes so far as to embrace it. By comparison with the woke and preachy modern movies, Dolemite might one day become another victim of cancel culture. Sadly, this work of art belongs to another era that no longer exists.

Dolemite is a larger than life foul-mouthed, busting-heads pimp that also happens to be comedian Rudy Ray Moore’s on stage alter-ego. In the film Dolemite is wrongfully imprisoned and then pardoned to hunt down the true culprits who are dumping drugs on his city. He fights kung fu style (this is the 1970s) And his girls, (the kind of girls a Pimp-Daddy hangs out with) are similarly trained. These ladies of the night, work as his posse, helping him take down the bad guys Charlie’s Angels style. It’s cheesy, it’s sleazy, it’s not to be taken seriously. Just sit back and enjoy the 1970s pop-culture from a whole new perspective.
