Maltese Falcon 1941

Maltese Falcon

John Huston’s directorial debut Maltese Falcon is a remake of a 1931 film based on the novel of the same name. Starring Humphrey Bogart the classic movie has been ranked one of the best of all times, and has significant historical value for starting the Film Noir genre. Even the site RottenTomatoes has given this black and white classic mystery a score of 100%.

Maltese Falcon is a who dunnit movie that encompasses archetype private detective, fat cat crime boss, and femme fatal. Humprey Bogart plays detective Sam Spade, a role which was turned down by the then popular gangster actor George Raft because he felt himself a bigshot and didn’t wish to work with an unknown director. Mary Astor played his femme fatal client, Peter Lorre as a creepy criminal and Sydney Greenstreet as Casper Gutman, the crime boss.

Interestingly John Huston’s father Walter Huston has a bit part in this film. As Captain Jacoby, he finally delivers the sought after Maltese Falcon to Sam Spade, then succumbs to his wounds. Fans having watched the movie countless times, try to spot all the continuity errors (mostly from costuming).
