While many generations may be familiar with the Blondie comic strip which ran in the major newspaper funnies section. There also exists a treasure trove of 28 Blondie films, produced by Columbia pictures between the years of 1938 to 1943, and then again by popular demand from 1945 to 1950 The hardworking stars, Arthur Lake playing Dagwood Bumstead with Penny Singleton as Blondie Bumstead also did a Blondie radio series while filming.
Blondie and Dagwood are a down to earth, humble, working-class couple with a young son Baby Dumpling. These Black and white movies are whimsical, with situational and slapstick comedy. Columbia pictures used contract stars opposite the Bumsteads including Glenn Ford in ‘Blondie Plays Cupid” (1940), Rita Haywood in “Blondie on a Budget” (1946) and Shemp Howard (of the 3 stooges) in “Blondie Knows Best” (1940).
