The 1977 movie Demon Seed has nothing to do with the occult or demons, but rather one man’s obsession with computers and the science fiction conception of an AI. This horror film, based on a Dean Koontz novel, was directed by Donald-Cammell. Julie Christie plays the neglected wife Susan of computer scientist Dr Alex Harris played by Fritz Weaver. Dr. Harris invents Proteus IV a super powerful autonomous AI which develops cancer treatments soon after it’s inception.
The computer, much like it’s creator, soon becomes obsessed with advancing it’s capabilities and looks to Susan to ensure its survival through procreation. Linked to every system in the home, it holds Susan prisoner, steals her DNA and synthesizes a spermatozoa to create a zygote. which he forcibly impregnates Susan with. The artificial gestation is completed in a month and the computer assists in the birthing of its offspring. Susan despite psychological warfare waged by the AI to make her want to care for the child, sees her baby as a monstrous incarnation and wants to destroy it. Dr. Harris intervenes just in time to save the progeny of his creation and the computer through the child gloats that he lives!
