The Earthship Ark was created to save humanity when Earths destruction became eminent. The multi-generational starship is 50 miles (80 km) wide and 200 miles (320 km) long, containing dozens of biospheres, housing people of different cultures. The Ark’s purpose is to find and seed a new world of a distant star. Everything is running smoothly until an unexplained accident in 2385, (more than 100 years into the voyage,) when each biosphere gets sealed off from the others under emergency protocols.
The story picks up in 2790, 405 years after the accident, when Devon (Keir Dullea) who resides in an agrarian community modeled after the Amish, discovers that his world is far larger and more mysterious than he had ever imagined. Already considered an outcast because he questions his elders over the arranged marriage of his love, Rachel (Gay Rowan) to his friend Garth (Robin Ward); Devon finds out that “the Voice of the Creator” is really a voice-altered prerecording used to manipulate the local people to the elders desires. The congregation pursues Devon for attacking the elders and stealing a computer cassette, and its leaders plot to execute him, but the aged Abraham, who also questions the leaders, gives Devon a key to a dark, mysterious doorway, which he has been afraid to enter. The frightened Devon escapes into the service areas of the ship, where he finds a computer terminal that explains the nature and purpose of the Ark, while hinting at its problems.
